Description
Antique French Statuette, PanD
elightful late 1800s French spelter statuette
figuring a young boy playing a transverse flute.
His expression is focused yet serene,
and the whole scene inspires peace and tranquility.
This is in fact Pan, the Greek god of the shepherds and flocks,
as well as the companion of the nymphs and
the god of wind music (thus the pan flute resting at his feet).
Yet, far from depicting him with goat's feet and horns as in Antiquity,
this neo-classical statuette portrays him as in a much more pleasing way.
In the late 1800s, Pan had become the symbol of the romantic imagination
and an increasingly common figure in art and literature,
including children's books such as Peter Pan.
This petite statue is 5½” high and has an oval base about 4” by 3” wide.
It weighs 1.86lb (0.845 kg) unpacked.
The photos do not do justice to this attractive piece.
Despite age, it remains in superb condition
with no
discernable break or cracking whatsoever.
It could just use a good dusting and some polishing
to bring out its shine if wished.
All in all, it is a
highly decorative piece
with
lots of appeal
,
perfect for adding
a wonderful antique touch
to your home décor.
